Waning Moon Over the Hill is an original illustrated novel set during the Warring States Period of Japan. The historical fiction follows the tragic life of Lady Tsukiyama, the wife of famous Japanese warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu. It loosely details the political strife of the country and focuses on the hardships of women at the time. From character, prop, and environmental designs to conceptual art, the illustrations use rich colors and detailed imagery to capture the weight of the dark era, while maintaining elements of the beauty and intricacy of traditional Japanese art. Combined with the popular anime-style of contemporary Japan, the novel is a love letter to Japanese history and culture.
